Elastocapillary filling of deformable nanochannels

چکیده
The capillary filling speed of wetting liquids of varying viscosity and surface tension in hydrophilic nanochannels with an elastic capping layer has been analyzed. The channels, with a height just below 80 nm, are suspended by a thin flexible membrane that easily deforms due to the negative pressure which develops behind the moving meniscus. In the elastocapillary filling of the channels, two opposite effects compete: the decreased cross channel sections increase the flow resistance, while the Laplace pressure that acts as the driving force becomes more negative due to the increased meniscus curvature. Although the meniscus position shows a square root of time behavior as described by the Washburn relation, the net result of the induced bending of the membranes is a definite increase of the filling speed. We propose a relatively straightforward model for this elastocapillary process and present experimental results of the filling speed of ethanol, water, cyclohexane, and acetone that are found to be in good agreement with the presented model, for membrane deflections of up to 80% of the original channel height. © 2007 American Institute of Physics. Formation of liquid menisci in flexible nanochannels.
In this paper we analyze the characteristic shape of the liquid meniscus at the fluid air interface in nanochannels of less than 80 nm height capped by a flexible membrane. Because of the induced negative pressure difference between the liquid pressure and the pressure outside, the 0.18 microm thin membrane on top of the channels bends downward. This elastocapillary equilibrium between the surf...
متن کاملFabrication and interfacing of nanochannel devices for single-molecule studies
Nanochannel devices have been fabricated using standard micromachining techniques such as optical lithography, deposition and etching. 1D nanochannels with thin glass capping and through-wafer inlet/outlet ports were constructed. 2D nanochannels have been made transparent by oxidation of polysilicon channel wall for optical detection and these fragile channels were successfully connected to mac...

We investigated the interactions between liquid, gas, and solid phases in the capillary filling process of closed-end nanochannels. This paper presents theoretical models without and with absorption and diffusion of gas molecules in the liquid. Capillary filling experiments were carried out in closed-end silicon nanochannels with different lengths. The theoretical and measured characteristics o...

We describe a microfabricated Fabry-Pérot interferometer with nanochannels of various heights between 6 and 20 nm embedded in its cavity. By multiple beam interferometry, the device enables the study of liquid behavior in the nanochannels without using fluorescent substances. During filling studies of ethanol and water, an intriguing filling mode for partially wetting water was observed, tentat...
متن کاملLiquid filling method for nanofluidic channels utilizing the high solubility of CO2.
We developed a fabrication method and a liquid filling method for a nano chemical reactor that used Y-shaped nanochannels specially designed for mixing and reacting. In order to reduce the pressure loss and to utilize the characteristics of the nanochannel, inlet microchannels were fabricated just beside the nanochannels. We investigated an initial liquid filling method into the nanochannels th...
